Snakelane 10, Pocklington, 26th February 2017

This is always a popular race on the calendar and indeed was the fourth consecutive year I have run the race myself although the first one in the yellow & green vest of Hartlepool Burn Road Harriers.

The remains of storm Doris had hung around long enough to greet myself and three other members of the club Graeme Surtees, Cary Surtees & Julie McGrath on what was a bitterly cold morning in Pocklington.

The local rugby club is used as the race headquarters and all the runners were escorted over to the start by the race director.

The start always tends to be a bit chaotic although given the number of runners is in excess of 900 it is perhaps to be expected. The removal of the pacing markers that were present in previous years didn’t help matters. It took the first two miles for the field to settle down and find its natural order. The course is undulating and run predominately on rural roads. I hung on the back of a group running around my target pace and this provided a good shelter as well. The race is sparsely supported given the rural setting, except for a few local farmers.

The race proved difficult this year with the headwinds seemed to tie in with the uphill sections of the race. Although my Strava data told me different the first real climb of the race came around mile 8 followed by another climb around half a mile later. When we finally reached the summit it was a gentle descent into the market square at Pocklington to the finish and a refuel in the local Costa.

All in all it is a good challenging race. Post-race I learnt that the next year’s race is going to have a 09:30 start which bearing in mind the amount of runners who have to travel over an hour I think is going to see a reduction in the field.

Well done to all the HBRH harriers who run on Sunday the times were as follows:-

Alan Robson      1:17:50

Graeme Surtees 1:30:10

Cary Surtees      1:33:29

Julie McGrath     1:43:46
