London Marathon, 21st April 2013
The Virgin London Marathon took place on Sunday 21st April, with three harriers joining the 34,170 club and individual runners to complete the 26.2 mile course around the Capital.
The masses race was won in 2:17:20, with the last runner coming over the line in 8:05:49. There is a place for everyone in this marathon (in theory! Getting one is a different matter!),,, those who are successful are guaranteed fantastic support all the way round.
Our contingency was led by coach Bryan Astill, who was tracked all over the city the day and night before at shows, bars and restaurants. Lots of club members were checking his progress round the course at 5k intervals and were ‘wowed’ by his splits of 5k in 19:37, 10k in 39:22 and half marathon in 1:23:38. His second half started well and he was still on target for a sub 2:50 and worked extremely hard to maintain his position. He finished in an amazing time of 2:59:14. Although this is not what Bryan was aiming for, it is a brilliant time and shows what a great athlete Bryan is. Bryan’s recent time of 2:04:54 in the 20 Mile Road Race at Hull shows he is capable of a 2:46 marathon in the right circumstances.
Steven Howe was next to cross the finish line after 26.2 miles of hard graft. Steven has been injured for years now with recurring problems with his back and legs but strives to keep running regardless. Tracking Stevens’ progress around the course, he actually speeded up towards the end and finished in 5:12:11. No doubt he will be slightly achey for a few days this week!
Julie McGrath was spurred on to run the marathon regardless of lack of training in light of the recent events at Boston…. ‘if anything it has made me even more determined to complete the race’. She ran the course raising money for local Multiple Sclerosis Groups and completed the 26.2 miles in 5:55:10.
